J_ART in ARMORY NIGHT CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE PERFORMANCE EVENING Saturday, March 5, 8-11 pm @WILLIAMSBURG ART & HISTORICAL CENTER performances by binbinFactory: Satoshi Haga & Rie Fukuzawa, Naoki Iwakawa, Akiko Furukawa & Her Dance Group, Sayori Matsuyama & Shipra Saraogi "Development of Life Circles" by Art/Dance Therapists Dancer: Shipra Saraogi, Art Coordinator: Sayori Matsuyama Collaborative performance by an art coordinator Sayori and a dancer Shipra who dances around abstract paintings. Both are coming from therapeutic fields of art and dance, believing that creative arts are the most powerful way to express one’s own feelings. Through art and body movements, both try to express abstract idea of "development of life circles.” As life is a constant flow, everything in nature keeps evolving every second without rest, which makes all things unique and beautiful. Thread binbinFactory, Satoshi Haga & Rie Fukuzawa binbinfactory is the name of Satoshi Haga’s performance company. For the past ten years, his fascination with the process of movement has shaped the company’s mission— the exploration and challenge of innovating physical-emotional expression. bin bin factory’s unusual antennae accesses and cultivates the reservoir of energy consciousness underlying universal human experiences. bin bin factory transforms basic ordinariness into alternate, parallel forms, shapes or feelings that are unexpected, poignant and brilliantly witty. The Apartment ~excerpt from Room 702~ Akiko Furukawa & Friends: Directed by Akiko Furukawa (Movement; collaborated with the performers). Performed by Gregory Bruhn, Courtney Jo Drasner, Jenni Hong and Akiko Furukawa Costume by Akiko Furukawa, Music by Puccini (from Gianni Schicchi), Towa Tei and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The idea: "The man is depressed. He shares an apartment with others who are going through adversities - It's tough. But, they face the adversities despite their anger, pain and sorrow. The man finds himself being inspired by their courage. " NY- Ghost Naoki Iwakawa, Action Painting with Music "In my art, I attempt to express a more primal state in which we once lived and in which we will live again. I believe man has an inherent understanding of beauty and truth. I attempt to show these in my art; however, when I paint on a canvas I see that I have fallen short. "Action painting is another attempt to truly be in the moment. The same state I seek is the same state, which Zen Buddhists seek, an unmediated awareness of existence. Although Zen and action painting may seem very different, they have the same goal. In the process of creating a work paint drips and spills, I move and tire, the canvas sometimes tears and brushes often break. I feel that the untidiness of this truly reflects life.” -Naoki
