Kurihara, Rika Kitazawa 北澤利佳

Kurihara (Berlin) painting
Working with a mix of classical and modern techniques and using a combination of acrylic paint, ink, marker pen, fine liner and collage he produces works that are both abstract and defined, playful yet concrete. Free flowing splatters of color are painstakingly refined with tiny line work, patterns and carefully masking taped color fields. His painted works float on meticulously prepared canvases, often with multiple layers of subtly textured under-painting, while his drawings on paper flow between minimalism and graphic design.
He is represented by Gallerie Heike Arndt in Berlin and Denmark. He also recently participated exhibitions at SomoS Art Gallery Berlin, Galaerie Art Valleggia Amsterdam, “Tokyo Art Crossing Berlin” at Neurotitan Gallery Berlin(by Pepper’s Project), Transmediale Vorspiel Berlin and more...
Born in Saitama in Japan 1983. Kurihara started his art activity in a Tokyo studio and exhibiting there from 2005 to 2007. Then he escaped the madness of the big city and after time travelling in Europe he arrived in Berlin, where he spent his first 5 years in an open studio, working and exhibiting as an artist in residence at the iconic art-zoo Kunsthaus Tacheles. There he also began experimenting with live improvised music, performance and collaboration. Following the demise of Tacheles in 2012 Kurihara migrated his solo practice to a bedroom studio in Berlin where he works every day.

彼の作品は古いテクニックと新しいテクニックをアクリル、インク、コラージュ、様々なペンなどを使って、混ぜ合わせる。それは抽象的でプレイフルであって、かつ、繊細でコンクリートだ。散らばった鮮明な色たちは、彼の繊細かつ力のあるライン、抽象的なパターンを洗練させる。それらは、キャンバスの上に几帳面に浮き漂い、紙の上ではミニマリズムとグラフィックデザイン間を吹き抜けて行くようだ。彼は現在、ギャラリー Heike Arndt(Berlin and Denmark)　に所属し、毎年ベルリンとデンマークでの展示に参加している。他にも色々な場所で活動しており、最近では SomoS Art Gallery Berlin、 Galaerie Art Valleggia Amsterdam,、“Tokyo Art Crossing Berlin” at Neurotitan Gallery Berlin(by Pepper’s Project),　メディアアートフェスティバルTransmediale Vorspiel Berlin　などにも参加した。
１９８３年、埼玉県に生まれる。
２００５年から仲間と共同アトリエをかまえ、彼のアート活動をスタートさせる。２００７年に、東京にずっと息苦しさを感じていた栗原は、半年の東、中央ヨーロッパの旅行を経て、ベルリンに到着し、そのまま住み始める。最初の５年間、Kunsthaus Tacheles　というスクワットハウスとしても有名だったアートハウスにスタジオを持ち、そこで精力的に制作に打ち込む。それと同時に即興、実験音楽の活動もはじめる。２０１２年にそのアートハウスの全てアーティストたちがその地域の投資家たちの手によって、強制立ち退きに会い、栗原は現在、自宅をアトリエとして制作を続けている。

The contrast of deep darkness and the light shedding from the building. No sign of life and no connection to the daily life. It gives an illusion that even with the scenery you used to seeing, you feel like wondering into a completely different world. I want to express such mysterious atmosphere of night scene with monotone description.

深い闇とそこに浮かび上がる、建物から漏れる光とのコントラスト。人の気配と日常との乖離。見慣れているはずの景色が、まるで全く別の世界へ迷い込んでしまったかのように錯覚させられる、そんな夜の風景が持つ不思議な空気をモノトーンの表現で描いていきたいと思います。
